Pieters church

The Peters church is the oldes Utrecht church and one of the oldest in Holland. It is an early Roman building in the form of a cross shaped basilica.. It is also the eastermost church of the church cross. The church has been built by The archbishop Bernoldes who also built large churches in Deventer and Emmerich (Germany) . The building was erected between 1040 and 1049, suffered from fire in the 12th century and was renovated in the 15th and 16 century by enlarging the south absis in gothic style and replacing the small Romanesque windows in the main absis by larger gothic ones.In 1674 the famuos hurricane destroyed the western twin towers, which were never rebuild. Apart from these facts this church remains an excellent example of early Romanic architecture in Holland which kept its charactaristic 11 century interior.
