St gertrudis Cathedral

It is not generally known that Utrecht hase not one but two cathedrals. At the end of the 18th century a conflict between the catholic bisdum of Utrecht and the Vatican took place on the inauguration of a new bishop. The Bishop refused to stand down and didn't recognise the authority of the Vatican anymore so the Old Catholic church came into being. Their seat is now in the in 1912 - 1914 built St Gertrudis cathedral. This building is built in Romanesque style to commemorate the demolished Church of St Mary whish was one of the finest examples of Romanesque Architecture in Utrecht.

Hidden form the streed hovewer one can find THE most beatiful Shelter church in Holland (17 century). After the protestants banned all catholic preaching in public, the catholics started to build so called "shelter churches" to practisise their religion.
