Dom, Utrecht

The oldest gothic cathedral of the Netherlands and the only one built in classic french style, although heavely influenced by German churches (i.e. Dom, Cologne). The tower is the highest in The Netherlands (112 m) and the second highest in Europe when it was built.

A modernistic residence in "Stijl" architecture, the only one in the world.

St Jans Cathedral

Location 's Hertogenbosch, 1 hr from Amsterdam

The Dutch answer to French Flamboyant gothic style. The church was built between 1350 and 1550 and is also the largest church in Holland (110 x 45 meters)

One can visit the parlement when the parlement is not in session.


Eise Eisinga Planetarium

The oldest working mechanical planetarium in the world. In 1774 a preacher announced the end of time because of a conjunction of 4 planets and the moon in the constellation of Aries. As a reaction on this announcement Eisinga built this planetarium between 1774 and 1781 to show the people that there was no danger at all from a planetary conjunction.

Maastricht

Location Maastricht, 2 hrs from Amsterdam

Maastricht is the oldest town in Holland it already was an important settlement during the Roman period. In holland only Amsterdam has more monuments than Maastricht. Among the monumental churches is the St Servaas. This is one of the oldest churches in The Netherlands

 


Marl Caves S. Limburg

Lacation Maastricht, Valkenburg, 2 - 2.5 hrs from Amsterdam

These are actualliy no caves but mines. Created since the Roman period. In the caves one can find paintings and sculptures from upto 1000 years old till now. It tells the live of the people during periods of war (when the minees were used for shelter.

 

Beemster

This is a nice example of dutch land creation

Amsterdam Defence works

This is a ring of fortrtesses to defend Amsterdam from attacks from outside. The land around and between the fortresses could be set under water to protect the city.
