A school trip I made before the internet era and... before the end of the cold war. Berlin was seperated and stretched over two countries (West Germany and the German Democratic Republic). A wall seperated both city parts and was named 'The wall of shame' (in the west) or 'Defence wall against fascism' (in the G.D.R.). In that time the G.D.R. had a political system more or less the same as that of North Korea. Diuring this school trip we were able to enter East Berlin and even had some spare time to walk around on our own. It was a fascinating experiance.
Today, Berlin looks a lot different than in those days but here are some unique pictures from the high tide of the cold war..
The famous entry to East Berlin, Checkpoint Charly.
East Berlin, Gedankstadte Treptow
Sculpted tablets in memorian of the fallen soldiers during WW II
East Berlin, Pergamon museum
East Berlin, Fernsehen turm
Hitler's Bunker.
