The famous cathedral of Aachen was built from the 8th century and onwards to the 16th century. It consists of a octagon shaped central domed building with a gothic choir attached to it in the 15th century. The Pfalz was used by Charles the Great as his palace chapel. This building is one of the most important stone buildings of that age and the only one with a stone ceiling north of the alps.
