This pages contains some pictures of a trip I made in May 2019. This was partly a repeat of my trip from last october. The route was a bit different but the destination (Chernobyl) remained the same. Enjoy.

In May 2019, I made another trip into the East with a friend of mine. Starting from Holland, we took the train to Berchtegaden for a 4 day visit. Here we visited the surroundings; the impressive Eisriesenwelt and the Konigssee.
Next we paid a short visit to Vienna before we took a sleeper train to Cracow.
In Cracow, we spent the first day visiting the city and the St. Mary's church, that I could finally see from the inside (last year it was closed due to renovations). In the evening we visited a dinner show of Polish folkore dance snd music.
The next day we visited Auschwuitz and Birkenau. An impressive visit to commemorate one of the darkest chapters in European history.
We took the train again to our next stop: Lviv in Ukraine, a charming old city. a bit like Cracow but without all the tourists. We had a nice Jugendstil hotel there in the middle of the old town. We paid a short visit the next day. First the Pharmacy museum and then the hstoric museum before we took the evening train to Kyiv.
The first day, we spent in Kyiv. It is a relaxed city with a very well functioning and ridiculously cheap metro system. We enjoyd the nice atmosphere in Kiev that surely could be the Eastern equivalent of Paris in all it's grandness. In the morning, we visited the cathedral that dates back to the 13th century. In the evening we met with a Ukrainean friend. We ended up in the secret bar of the Chicken Kyiv restaurant, having a nice time.
The next morning we visited Chernobyl. Again a marvellous and somewhat unworldly experience. It is not only the abandoned exclusion zone but all the stories behind it that impresses a lot!
The next day, this nice holiday ended. We took the plane and flew home via Paris.
In mei 2019 maakte ik opnieuw een trip naar Oost Europa na uitgenodigd te zijn door een vriendin. Vanuit Nederland hebben we eerst de trein naar Berchtesgaden genomen waar we de omgeving verkend hebben en een bezoek gebracht aan Eisriesenwelt.
Voordat we na drie dagen de nachttrein naar Krakau pakte, hebben we nog een kort bezoek gebracht aan het altijd fraaie Wenen.
De eerste dag in Krakau verkende we de stad en bezochten we de Maria kerk, die ditmaal wel open was voor bezichtiging. 's-Avonds bzochten we een Folklore show met muziek en dans.
De dag erna bezochten we het indrukwekkende Auschwitz en Birkenau dat een gitzwarte bladzijde uit de Europese geschiedenis herdenkt.
Opnieuw namen we de trein, nu naar Lviv in Oekraine, wat een heel charmante stad is. Een beetje zoals Krakau maar dan zonder de hordes toeristen. We zaten in een leuk Jugentstil hotel middenin de stad. De volgende dag bezochten we het apothekers museum en het historisch museum voordat we de trein naar Kyiv namen.
De eerste dag brachten we in Kyiv zelf door. Kyiv is een relaxte stad met een goed functionerend an belachelijk goedkoop metro netwerk. We genoten van de prettige sfeer in de stad die je wel het Parijs van het Oosten kan noemen. In de ochtend bezochten we de fraaie kathedraal van Kyiv. 's-Avonds hebben we gegeten met een Oekraiense vriendin en eindigde we in de geheume bar van het Chicken Kyiv restaurant.
De volgende dag stond Chernobyl op het programma. Dit was (opnieuw) een onwerelds en zeer indrukwekkende dag. Dit komt niet alleen door de plaats zelf maar vooral ook de verhalen die eronder liggen.
De volgende dag kwam er alweer een eind aan deze fraaie reis! Bia Parijs vlogen we weer terug nar huis.
