This was a short trip to Cyprus. primary meant to watch the longest lunar eclipse of the century. Of coarse , Cyprus had a lot to offer as well. It is the only divided state left in Europe, The south, being independent and member of the EU and the North, a self-proclaimed independent country but heavily influenced by the Turks, who are the only country that actually recognises their independence. Today, the island is split by a demarcation zone that is goverened by a UN peace keeping force.

Nonetheless, a lot of nice sights are located in Cyprus, not the least the capital, Nicosia, the last divided city of Europe. It has an ols partly walled centre and one can now cross the demarcation line to the Turkish part where some of the nicest buildings are, like the grand mosque, a converted gothic church, and the Nuyuk Ga.

Also the Akamas National park ism worth visitingh with its grand views, the bath of Aphrodites and beautiful beaches and lagoons with azure blue sees.

Famagusta and its surroundings are certainly worth a visit. Not only because of the intriguing ride through the demarcation zone to reach it, but also because of its surroundings. Here, the beautiful Barnabas monistary is located here but also the Salamis archeological site, with its nice mozaics, Roman Theatre and bath house. The city of Famagusta hosts a beautiful cathedral (now mosque), that has been built with the Paris Notre Dame as example. The ghost town of Varosha, left empty after the occupation with its palm beach and deserted hotels.
