Of course, the eclipse was the immediate incentive to plan this trip but it also gave me an opportunity to spend some time with my long lasting friends Jan and Kristyan. We made an 8000km (5000 miles) road trip, which brought us to the most splendid places in the West.

Starting this trip on august 11, we drove north. The first week, we visited Canada, to be precise, Victoria and the Butchard garden, as well as the Maritime rainforest in Olympic National park. These were places that Kristyan wanted to visit badly. Hurricane Ridge offered a splendid view over the snow-capped mountains.

Also this trip was the opportunity for Jan to visit some long lasting Friends. Also, another friend flew in from Florida to watch the total solar eclipse. Speaking of it. It was a huge success! We met Theo, a friend of mine who invited us to watch the eclipse with him and some students, teachers and other people at the Cascade High school at Turner, less than 100 meters from the centre line. The eclipse was very beautiful and the first eclipse experience for some of us was a huge success.

After the eclipse, Kristyan returned home. We vbisited tthe infamous mount st Helens before we drove due East to visit the Craters of the moon and, of course, the impressive Yellowstone NP. Here, we spent two days of exploration and seeing the most beautiful coloured hot springs, bison, elks and canyons.

Then, heading south, we passed the impressive Tetons, “cowboy town”Jackson, Salt Lake “Mormom” city and Arches before as arrived at Durango where Jan got Rolfed and we paid a visit to the most impressive dwellings of the Anasazi Indians at Mesa Verde. After this, we entered Navajo land, which has probably one of the most impressive landscapes of the US, including Shiprock and Monument valley. In Page, A “shit-hole” town according to one of Jan’s friends, we visited Antelope canyon. The sun played games with the sandstone rock, causing the most beautiful colours in the canyons.

Through the Grand Escalante we visited the impressive Bryce and Zion national parks before we landed into the craziness of Las Vegas. Our trustworthy companion, Jan’s Honda CRV a.k.a the Golden cruiser, brought us everywhere without a hiccup. However, the next day we put it to a serious test by plunging ourselves into Death Valley, as the name suggested, a very inhospitable place and moreover, the hottest place on earth!

After this adventure, it was time to return to San Francisco again,. However, not before we visited Mono lake and Ken, a good friend of Jan. After another day in San Francisco, we had a farewell dinner party with many friends from the bay area, Unfortunately the road trip came to an and and I had to leave this beautiful place. After an unwillingly stay in London caused by the airliner, I returned home on September 9th.

End of a extremely beautiful road trip where we saw some of the finest places, Mother Nature has to offer!

Uiteraard was de zonsverduistering de aanleiding om naar Amerikas af te reizen maar het gaf ook de mogelijkheid omsamen met goede vrienden wat tijd door te brengen. We hebben een 8000km (5000 mijl) lange rondreis door het westen van de USA gemaakt waarbij we enkele van de meest spectaculaire plaatsen bezochten. Eerst reden we noordwaards voor een bezoek aan ghet Canadese Victoria, waar de zeer fraaie Butchard gardens liggen. Vervolgens brachten we een aantal dagen door op het Olympic penninsula met zijn gelijknamige national park, waar we de Hurricane Ridge en het regenwoud bezichten.

Voor Jan was deze trip ook een uitghelezen kans om een hoop vrienden te bezoeken. Een van hen kwam zelf over uit Florida om de zonsverduistering te zien. Over de zonsverduistering gesproken, deze was een enorm succes. Theo, een vriend van mij had me getipt en uitgenodigd op zijn waarneem locatie, de Cascade highschool van Turner. Samen met de leerlingen en leraren en een paar dozijn belangstellende zagen we een heel fraaie eclips!

Na de eclipse vertrok Krystian weer naar San Francisco terwijl Jan en ik, na een bezoek aan de roemruchte mount St Helens, naar het oosten. We bezochten Craters of the moon National monument en uiteraard Yellowstone. Vooral die laatste is bijhzonder indrukwekkend met zijn gekleurde hete bronnen, bizons, edelherten en diepe canyons.

Hierna bezochten we, zuidswaards reizend, de hoofdstad van het Mormonisme, Salt Lake city. Hierna reden we naar Durango maar niet voordat we Arches NP bezochten. In Durango verbleven we weer bij een vriendin van Jan, Jan kreeg zelfs een massage. We bezochten hier Mesa Verde die waarschijnlijk de mooiste oude Indianen nederzetting (13de eeuw) bezit.

Nu bereikte we Navajo nation. Via de Four corners reden we door een prachtig onaards landschap met als onbedreigd hoogtepunt natuurlijk Monument valley! In page, een plaats waar je niet dood gevonden wilt worden, volgens een vriend van Jan, streken we neer. De volgende dag bezochten we de Lower en Upper Antelope canyon, een kleurenpracht die zijn weerga niet kent!

Na een bezoek aan Horseshoe bend reden we noordwest waards om het fraaie Bryce canyon te bezoeken, met zijn magstrale uitzichten. Ook Cedar Breaks viel goed in de smaak en na een bliksem bezoek aan Zion kwamen we weer even in de "bewoonde" wereld, Las Vegas. Hierna werd ons trouwe werkpaard, Jan's Honda CRV, ook wel bekend als de "Golden Cruizer", op de proef gesteld in de warmte van Death Valley. Een proef die glansrijk doorstaan werd.

Hierna werd het langzamerhand weer tijd om terug naar San Francisco te gaan, maar niet voordat we nog een vriend van Jan in Carson city bezocht hadden. De laatste dag toonde Kristyan me nog het Exploratorium (wetenschapsmuseum in San Francisco) en het oude deel van de stad voordat we in Mill valley een afscheids dineetje hadden met al Jan, Kristuyan en enkele vrienden.

Helaas was het de volgende dag weer tijd om naart huis te gaan. Via een lange (onvrijwillige|) stopover in Londen, kwam ik op 9 september 's-avonds laat weer thuis aan. Einde van een meer dan indrukwekkende reis!
