Ringvormige zonsverduistering /Annulair solar eclipse 
31 - 5 - 2003 - Durness, Scotland

Op 31 mai 2003 was er een ringvormige zonsverduistering te zien in Schotland. Voor deze gelegenheid ben ik, slechts gewapend met een digitale camera naar het hoge noorden afgereisd om daar de ringvormige zonsverduistering waar te nemen. Ik ben in Durness neergestreken, volgens de Britten 'The best place on the Brittish mainland to view the eclipse'. Dat was te merken want de dag voor de eclips was er al een BBC ploeg opnames aan het maken voor 'The sky at night'.  De avond voor de eclips stroomde de camping vol maar omdat ikal een aantal dagen eerder aangekomen was had ik nog de keuze mijn tent direct aan de rand van de klif te zetten. Zo was het uitzicht op zee optimaal. 's Avonds en 's Nachts was iedereen al druk aan het voorbereiden en het werd al snel duidelijk dat er van slapen niet veel meer zou komen. Hoewel iedereen behoorlijk gespannen was, was de sfeer opperbest. Hier en daar vonden luidruchtige eclipsfeesten plaats en dit had zelfs tot gevolg dat er mensen de volgende dag een dubbele kater hadden; één van de drank en de ander omdat ze vergeten waren op te staan om de eclips te kunnen zien

Uiteindelijk kwam het grote moment. De zon kwam voor ons onzichtbaar op (3:22 uur UT) omdat de horizon schuil ging achter bewolking. De spanning nam toe maar juist op het moment dat de ringvormige fase aan de gang was (3:45 UT)  kwam de zon voorzichtig tevoorschijn. Ik had mijn eerste ringvormige verduistering gezien! Daarna werd het alleen maar mooier doordat de langzaam breder wordende sikkel door de mistlagen een prachtig beeld vormde. Het deed mij sterk denken aan de foto's van de 'ring of fire' uit 1992 (Californie). Helaas was het na een uur alweer voorbij.

On May 31th a annulair solar eclipse was visible from the outermost north of Scottland. Durness was regarded as the best observing place of the Brittish mainland. Annularity lasted 2m08s and would be visible about 20 minutes after sunrise. An impression. (times are in UT). I took the opertunity to watch this eclipse from Durness, Scotland. According to the media 'The best place on the Brittish mainlang to watch the eclips. Even a BBC TV crew war present. The day before the ecips the campsite flooded with people. Because I arrived a few days earlier I had the opertunity to put my tent on the right spot. That evening everyone was busy prepairing for the event and it became clear that there wouldn't  be much time to sleep that night. Despite the tension (what would the weather do?) people were optimistic and in a good mood. At some places there were noisy eclips partys. Some people were so drunk that they had a double headache because the forgot to wake op in the morning and missed the eclipse.

Finally the big moment came. The sun rised invissibly because of clouds at the horizon (at 4:22 AM). Tension increased but the waiting was rewarded. Just during the annulair phase the sun popped out of the clouds! I experienced my first annular eclipse! After that the view became spectacular because the thin solar crescent  was beautifully visible through the clouds. It looked a little bit like the pictures from the 1992 eclipse (California).
